Why is My Computer/Laptop Making Me Tired?

Sheila Reavill

Have you ever wondered why you get so tired after spending hours in front of a computer? The phrase I hear a lot is "Why am I so tired? I didn't do anything?" It could be the wireless radiation coming from the computer, but we'll address that at another time. It also could be the electric fields coming from your device or computer

This is is because you are coupled to the electric fields of your computer/laptop every time you put your hands on the keyboard. Imagine tiny, little, invisible, glowing hairs reaching out and touching the electric system of your body. Here is a way to see it for real on this You Tube plasma ball video. This You Tube video shows the boy touching the glass as the electricity follows his hands, and the weird part, seems to travel through his body to the audio plug and power it to make a sound. Weird, eh? Well, our body is electric, so no surprise there.

The problem is that there is an energy cost associated with those tiny hairs. They wear you out. So, how do you get those tiny hairs to stay put and not reach out to you. Yes, this is one of those times when reaching out is a bad thing. The best way is to ground your laptop or computer.

Grounding Your Computer/Laptop

There are five ways to do this all which require grounding to the elecrical system of your house. What is the grounding system? It is a pathway that allows current to flow into the ground should there be a fault (accident). It was added to prevent shock and fire. Well it is in the wiring in the walls, and you access it through the rounded hole at the electric outlet

If you have a three pronged plug, you have a ground. If your plug is only two blades that insert into the wall, it's not grounded because it has nothing to access the grounding system with in the round hole. Since some houses built prior to 1962 do not have a ground because it wasn't required at the time, you need to test your outlet to see if it is actually grounded using a circuit tester (Ace Hardware for $11). Rarely, on occasion, there is a round hole, but it doesn't function, so don't be faked out by a round hole. Test, especially if the house was built prior to 1962. If you have no ground, you will want to have an electrician install an outlet with a ground.

Ok, now that the technical stuff is out of the way. Let's get to the five ways.

Five Ways to Ground Your Computer/Laptop

1) Use a shielded and grounded power cord on your computer/laptop. This will lower the coupled voltage that strays from your power cord to your body and grounds the computer/laptop at the same time. Can be purchased at Safe Living Technologies ($7 plus $20 shipping).

2) Ground the computer or laptop with a grounding cord from Less EMF ($8.95). Plug the usb end into the computer or laptop and the grounded plug into the outlet.

3) Or ground the laptop or computer with a printer cable. As long as the printer is plugged in with a grounded cord, the computer or laptop receives the same groundedness by virtue of it being conected to the printer. The printer doesn't even have to be on. In fact it's better that it's not on.

4) Best option is to not have the laptop plugged in when in use. Use it with the battery power only, and you skip inviting the household wiring voltage onto your device via he power cord.

5) Macs only: Never use only the two pronged plug, as it is ungrounded. Use the original grounded power extension cable and attach it to the square corner. Now you are grounded.

There you have it. Lowered EMFs and more energy for you. If you need a handy paper reference guide, you can print out the PDF here. I love paper. How much voltage do you pull off your body once your computer/laptop is grounded? A Building Biologist has witnessed client's bodies going from 5,000 millivoltz to 100-200 millivoltz just by grounding the computer/laptop. Does it make a difference? Yes, in voltage, it certainly does. How can you test it? In a follow up blog I will explain how you can test your body voltage using a simple multimeter.
